So, People have decided to do this thing where they say “OH, YOU CAN’T LIKE THIS BAND BECAUSE OF YOUR CHRISTIAN BELIEFS.” I’m slightly confused into why. Yes, I am for lack of better words a Christian: lets get more into it, I’m a Pentecoastal Christian which means my belief is soley on the spirit of God- but I absolutely loathe the idea of religion. Yes, I do believe there is a God and that there is a possibility of an afterlife- but I don’t spend my time being nice to people merely so I can ‘get in’, actually, I do try to avoid the human race as much as possible so I guess that kind of cancels out the chances abit more. What really gets me though- and please excuse my ignorance- but how can someone’s music taste define their religion? Yeah, I don’t know either.
Before you spark up your anon hate/ info. novels, let me make one thing perfectly clear:- I have these beliefs due to experiences I have personally had, sodon’t sit there and try and tell me these things never happened/ these things weren’t real, because I’ll laugh and tell you your shirt looks nice in the sunlight.I have a very wide range of knowledge into different religions, aswell as theories of evolution- so I like to think I know what I’m talking about.
In my own opinion: the things you enjoy don’t effect your religion or lack there of. Outside stimuli does not effect your religious beliefs if they are truly TRULY what you believe.
Anyway, so the bands I listen too and the things that inspire me are probably 98% frowned on by the average person/’christian’ and majority of the people ask me why I like to listen/watch/read/are inspired, etc by these things. I never have a decent answer which is partly because I don’t actually think one is required.
I don’t really think one is requried at all due to he fact that the human mind enjoys different stimulis- such as music, reading, art etc. merely because it does.
I know personally I’d like to listen to something loud and with meaning, rather then something that tells me how to feel. I prefer things that make me think about a subject or encourage using your mind to look at different outlooks and meanings for particular things.
Another thing that makes things appealing to me is whats being said. Does it have a political fuck you message in amongst it? If so, then heck yeah I’m interested- does this statement contradict everything I’ve just said? Sure does! Give me a good book about Che being a political mad man and I’ll sit down and nod my head willingly. Sit me down and shut me up and force feed me a documentary about why the gangs in Sri Lanka are still hating eachother due to a bottle of sand and open my eyes to something knew and I’ll appreciate the heck out of it.
Make things aesthetically pleasing. My most favourite things that please me are the things I just simply cannot explain.
Now by this point I’ll be shocked if anyone has kept reading, but that’s okay because purple murder lies under the milky way on Sunday. Oh and also: constantly being open to other people’s opinions and thoughts is another big reason into why I can’t/ don’t let outside stimuli effect my beliefs- I have heard almost eeeeeeeeeeeeeevery story in the book. Seriously, everything. People can tell me everything they have seen- if it be in isle four in woolworths, on the beaches of Spain or on the best acid trip they have ever taken- there’s nothing that shocks me anymore. Someone could come over and tell me that they ate the intestines of a small ferret cat and then licked the popes face and then shook hands with Henry Rollins all for a free beer and I’d think that was cool, but wonder how that person felt (and also wonder why they were so desperate for a beer) but would not be bothered. I’ve had people tell me alllll sorts of religious ‘facts’ and have not been bothered. As I said right at the start- My beliefs are present due to experience, all of the ‘facts’ in the world could not shake me.
In no way was any of this intended to make sense/offend anyone, this is quite obviously just my opinion and some sort of answer into why, as a ‘christian’ I like obscene things andn ot feel that is should affect my choices. Also, this was a completely bogus idea and I need to pee.
